Letter: This era’s new ruling class

The marvelous Battle of the Hook re-enactment at Gloucester’s Warner Hall this past weekend had my wife and I spellbound. Accolades to all who were part of it cannot begin to equal their superb effort and contributions.

On Sunday we were viewers of the "Main Battlefield’s" rendition of the burning of Mrs. Whiting’s farm. As a British company moved forward to temporarily drive off the militia, a very talented event volunteer enlisted to keep the crowd behind a thin rope barricade began to rally those in the grandstand and others to boo the British "enemy." It was all good natured, but we booed just the same.

The officer in charge of that company broke character for a moment to step out and speak directly to the crowd and yell, "We’re with the government; we’re here to help."

That bit of comedy was greeted with a loud, rousing, knowing and deprecating laugh. Was this another case of art mirroring life, or evidence of a grow...
