Letter: This did not have to happen

Editor, Gazette-Journal: When I opened the Gazette-Journal last week and saw the lead articles about the Mathews population drop positioned next to “County orders restaurant to make $300,000 + in repairs,” it was hard to ignore the connection. Leadership requires skill in problem solving. It is not about bullying or power tripping. The unrelenting persecution of the two experienced restaurant owners at the Hole-In-The-Wall on Gwynn’s Island is a prime example of how to discourage growth in our community. Mac and Dean gave our town two restaurants to enjoy, Southwind and The White Dog. Along the way they made many friends and I am proud to count my family in this group of people. They saw a need for a waterfront restaurant in a county with the second largest amount of waterfront property in Virginia and brought us Hole-In-The-Wall.
