Letter: Things to be admired

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

Big things are to be admired, even stupidity. So said Samuel Johnson, 18th century lexicographer, critic, poet and conversationalist.

All of which brings to mind regulations, ordinances, procedures and so forth that stultify progress. This can be translated as business enterprise, job opportunity, community development, etc.

Those in search can cross the Coleman Bridge to York County. But for a sign on Route 17, there would be no way of knowing you had departed Newport News. Read the Gazette-Journal page devoted to court cases and the sheriff’s report. Much is devoted to exports from across the York River. This too is progress. There are many amongst us who go there to work, but, at the day’s end, gladly return to Gloucester.

Philip W. Hamilton Jr.
