Letter: ‘The Ugly American’

Editor, Gazette-Journal: “The Ugly American,” a novel first published in 1958, supposedly served as a “wakeup call” for our government. At the time, it so impressed J.F.K. that he sent copies to many of his Senate colleagues. It pointed out the ignorance and arrogance of Americans when it comes to dealing with other governments and cultures. Well, it did not work and years later we were involved in wars in Asia and the Middle East that caused the unnecessary deaths of many young Americans. Now, the “Ugly American” is back, this time in the evils of the Trump Administration. Shakespeare wrote, “The evil that men do lives after them, the good is oft’ interred with their bones” (Julius Caesar, act 3). The small amount of “good” that Trump has done will soon be forgotten, his numerous “evils” will, unfortunately, last for years. The U.S. was once looked upon as the world’s best among nations.
