Editor, Gazette-Journal: I was appalled when I first heard about the upcoming vote to redistrict Virginia to gain more Democratic Congressional seats. Like many of us, I try to consider values and vote by conscience, and this vote hits me as wrong. Why, then, would I vote in favor of gerrymandering, when the whole point of gerrymandering is to give one side an advantage over the other? Values and conscience changed my mind. A sense of fairness. An understanding that our Congressional seats affect the whole nation. First, the president called on Texas to find five more Republican seats for him in Congress, which meant gerrymandering. Texas said yes. So Democratic California gerrymandered for balance. Then came Missouri and North Carolina for the Republicans. And the procession of states has continued. Is it right? Of course not.
