Letter: The real meaning of Memorial Day

A long weekend, cookouts and store/internet sales are too often what Memorial Day brings to mind for Americans who “observe” this national holiday that was started over a century ago. Memories that began in my childhood and continued for many years include parades that schools, civic groups, bands and veterans marched in, while onlookers waved flags and sang along to the patriotic music being played by passing groups. When did this become a commercial opportunity and just a social occasion instead?

American Legion Post 83 in Mathews held its annual program to commemorate the true meaning of the day … to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country in the Armed Forces.
