Letter: The caring spirit of Mathews

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

Today we are in the midst of distributing hundreds of wrapped gifts to families and children in Mathews. The contributions came from 26 different families and organizations who “adopted” 31 families in the county this year. We watch this scenario of gifting every year and your generosity and enthusiasm for giving seem endless.

On Dec. 11 and 12 our Christmas store was held at Kingston Parish House. The project was accomplished through the efforts of volunteers who together logged 955 hours toward shopping, setting up and manning the store. We would like to give special thanks to the following: MHS Beta Club and Boy Scout Troop 124 for all their heavy lifting; Mathews Lions Club for many new bikes and toys; Mathews Family YMCA, whose Angel Tree brought in lots of toys, clothes and household items; Toys for Tots (a U.S. Marines program) for their donation of many new toys; and to Kingston Parish for housing the store again this year.
