Letter: The benefits of broadband

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

From time to time, I receive e-mail notification of comments on broadband and Wi-Fi from the county’s website. Two things caught my attention: Who would it serve and who would pay? 

Who would it serve? Everyone. Communities that are farther from the Route 17 corridor would surely benefit the most as they have the worst service now. But a properly planned, installed and priced Wi-Fi could be a boon to everyone.

As to who should pay, it was mentioned only those who benefit should pay for the infrastructure. No, the county has public water and sewer, yet many have septic and wells, yet we all help pay. The county has public schools, yet many in Gloucester have empty nests. Yet we all help pay. Public infrastructure and education could not exist otherwise.

The cost of public Wi-Fi broadband infrastructure depends on many factors, but I believe the return on investment also comes from many sources. First is easy, affordable access to the digital world...
