Letter: The abuse of a national treasure

The Citizens Coalition for Good Government is a group of citizens— Democrats, Republicans and voters for honesty. The membership consists of a broad spectrum of the people. They include lawyers, doctors, elected and unelected officials of the government. We are a broad-based coalition. We believe in government by the people and for the people.

At a recent meeting, it was brought to our attention that five years ago, the Chesapeake Bay blue crab was at its lowest number. VMRC and VIMS decided to close winter dredging. It was taking mostly female crabs that would spawn the following summer. It would also stop the destruction of the underwater grass beds that remove pollution and put oxygen back into the bay. The General Assembly agreed to pay the crab dredgers $300 a day for the whole season for not dredging.

This past year, the crabs had a good season. This winter, VMRC, together with VIMS, again let the bay be dredged. They let four crab dredgers ...
