Editor, Gazette-Journal: To the editor and my fellow Virginians, I’m reaching out not just as a business owner, but as your neighbor—someone who cares about the future of our communities and the fairness of our elections. In 2020, we came together to support a bipartisan redistricting commission because we wanted a process that put people before politics and kept our democracy strong. Now, there’s talk of changing that process, using the excuse that other states are doing it or that national politics demand it. But just because another state puts party interests first doesn’t make it right for Virginia. Following bad examples only weakens our voice and our trust in the system. When any political party—no matter which one—tries to change the rules for their own advantage, it puts our representation at risk.
