Wow! What a night at the fourth annual MVRS Chili Cook-Off! Nearly 500 people, great chili and a true team effort by all six of the “competing” organizations!

This annual winter event is one of the most community-oriented in Mathews County with the following civic organizations participating: Mathews Rotary, Mathews Lions, Mathews Ruritan, Piankatank Ruritan, the American Legion Post 83 and the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad—an all-star lineup of groups who only have helping others as their total mission.

Keeping with that mission, all the funds raised go back in some form to help Mathews people! The American Legion Post 83 again won both the Judges’ Award and the People’s Choice Award! Congratulations for a “sweep” two years in a row!

A special shout-out to the Piankatank Ruritan Club for use of their facility and to Lynne’s/Richardson’s restaurants for supplying all the cornbread, desserts, plates, bow...
