Letter: Thanking the first responders

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

On June 1, the beginning of hurricane season, the Piankatank Community League and the residents of the Harcum area hosted the June dinner meeting for the Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad, Inc. These men and women, who will be called upon this summer in the event of a storm, enjoyed the efforts of residents who again supplied an ample array of delicious home-cooked food in appreciation of the GVFRS efforts.

I wish to thank these residents, kitchen helpers and individuals who worked to make this dinner another successful event as they have over the years. The support of the Harcum community is only exceeded by the GVFRS firemen and EMTs who respond to the community’s needs. This was evident during the dinner as their radios alerted them on a number of occasions that a resident of Gloucester reported power lines down during the storm that night or a call for medical assistance.
