Letter: Striking a balance for all

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

In response to your April 28 editorial “The will of the people,” I believe the Gloucester Board of Supervisors did a responsible job of listening to the will of all the people, and acted in the best interest of all county citizens.

In this economy, many Gloucester citizens are seniors on fixed incomes, or underemployed, or unemployed, so raising the tax rate is a hardship for them. These people do contact their supervisors, but did not receive the robo-call to parents and teachers to show up at the March 30 budget hearing and support a tax increase, resulting in (in your words) “an overwhelming majority of residents who filled the T.C. Walker Education Center auditorium that night encouraged the board to raise taxes.” So, those in attendance overwhelmingly favored the tax rate increase. I don’t blame them—if I could get a raise which is higher than my tax increase, I’d lobby for a tax rate hike also.
