Letter: Standing up for the environment

Representing the nonprofit, bipartisan Citizens Climate Lobby at the Heathsville Earth Day Festival on Saturday, I learnt a lot from people stopping at my table.

A pediatrician member of Virginia Clinicians for Climate Action was very concerned about health impacts of climate change—infectious diseases, heart attacks, asthma and other respiratory diseases, etc. He also noted the increasing numbers of children presenting with anxiety and depression. On top of fears over school shootings, they are stressed by the lack of concern/action regarding climate change by adults.

One woman smirked as she told me she didn’t “believe” in climate change. We have wasted decades, misled by the fossil fuel industry’s misinformation. They deliberately and successfully created doubt. Legislation rewarded their lobby investments handsomely.
