Letter: Stand up for all Virginians

Editor, Gazette-Journal: Since 1913, the number of representatives in the U.S. House of Representatives has been fixed at 435. By law, those seats are distributed across the 50 states in accordance with state population, as identified in the U.S. Census every 10 years. This ensures voters in all states have equal power in the creation of laws. I oppose any and every change that seeks to alter this equal distribution of power. In July of 2025, Donald Trump asked Governor Greg Abbott (Texas) to alter congressional districts in Texas, mid-decade, in order to get five more Republicans elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Thus began Donald Trump’s efforts to politically manipulate congressional districts to increase the number of Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives. So far, he has convinced Republicans in Texas, North Carolina, Ohio, Missouri and Florida to redistrict, to give the GOP more power in the U.S. Congress.
