Letter: Solving problems that don’t exist

Last Tuesday, the Mathews County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution written and sponsored by Janine Burns. This resolution calls on the state of Virginia to pass statewide laws restricting fracking based on geologic conditions unique to Mathews County. As of today, there are no oil or gas wells being drilled in Mathews, nobody is applying for a permit to begin fracking in Mathews, and nobody is planning to apply for such a permit. One of the reasons why government has grown so large and intrusive is because too many legislators try to make a name for themselves. To do so, they pass legislation that presumes to solve problems that do not exist.

I attended the meeting and heard Mrs. Burns say that this resolution was “about water quality, not fracking.” I defy anyone to read the resolution and find this statement truthful.
