Editor, Gazette Journal: Mark Givens, the Music Director of Mathews County Public Schools and the students involved in the music program—the 6th Grade Beginning Band, the 7th Grade Intermediate Band, the Blue Devil Band and the Seahawk Band, the String Ensemble, the Percussion Ensemble and the Jazz Band had an opportunity to play. Approximately 76 students were involved in delivering an incredible performance to a packed auditorium at their Combined Spring Concert on May 20. The entire evening of music from Bach to Stravinsky, themes from Harry Potter, Star Wars, and so much more was impressive. Students assigned to introduce each selection included comments on how much they had learned and how much they enjoyed being in the music program. Mr. Givens has reached out to the community by enlisting support from organizations and taking his students out into the community to play. In appreciation, he presented plaques to those supporters.
