Letter: Sheriff-elect questioned about past statements

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

I wanted to make sure the citizens of Mathews County are aware of the recent developments that unfolded last week at the sheriff’s office. Contrary to public statements made by sheriff-elect Mark Barrick in the Gloucester-Mathews Gazette Journal on Nov. 10, 2011, at least two deputies have been released, effective Dec. 31, 2011.

I understand that when a new sheriff is elected, there are often changes made. What upsets and angers me is that Mark Barrick claimed that he had no plans to get rid of anyone. Clearly, this was not the case. Deputy Rhodes, canine handler for the sheriff’s office, is one of the deputies that was released. By releasing Deputy Rhodes, Mark Barrick has also eliminated the canine program that was created and maintained by Deputy Rhodes and supported by the community. I have gathered some quotes made by Mark Barrick and present actions that were taken by Mark to contradict his statements.
