Letter: Send a message that the KKK is unwelcome

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

The Gloucester-Mathews Gazette-Journal reports (Feb. 14, 2019, page 10B) that “white supremacist flyers were distributed in the Mathews Court House area over the past weekend.” The article goes on to say that the flyers “gave contact information for the Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan.”

Major John Williams of the Mathews County Sheriff’s Office said that the same flyers were distributed in at least one other neighborhood. Although the flyers “denigrated people of various races, ethnicities and religions” and asserted “‘white racial purity is America’s only security,’” Major Williams said that because the flyers “didn’t contain any overt threat,” there was nothing to be done about it.

I am appalled that the KKK should think that Mathews County is a hospitable place to recruit members and to spew its hate speech, and I know I am not alone. But I am not surprised. ...
