Letter: School’s open, drive carefully

The purpose of this letter is to ask for your help in Mathews County as it pertains to bus safety, based on two local incidents. As a division, our first priority is the safety of all of our children. In both recent incidents, no child was severely injured, but the potential for severe injury existed. Although we always address bus safety at the beginning of the school year, we have decided to highlight it again during the school year. Each school is finding opportunities to speak with their students about this issue and we will be showing bus safety videos.

With drivers today finding many opportunities to multi-task while they drive, we would also like to take this time to remind the public to be extremely cautious when approaching bus stops and buses. Young children often assume drivers will stop and they often stand so close to the road that any lapse in attention on the part of a driver could result in a child’s injury.
