Letter: School security

Editor, Gazette-Journal:
After having read the article about upgrading security in Mathews schools and the headline about more oversight for homeschools, an idea came to mind that Mr. Daniel is being encouraged to do part of our sheriff’s job.
Further, the Virginia Department of Education should not be in the business of building prisons, offering grants to school divisions if fencing and security systems are installed. These practices are based on fear! Remember in the depths of the world-wide depression, Franklin Roosevelt told the nation in his first inaugural address: “The only thing to fear is fear itself.”
Certainly, there are other grants available for our schools from the VDE, grants that are focused on actual education. No one wants a school environment that doesn’t welcome and challenge, that’s why so many people have moved away from public schools if at all feasible.
