Letter: School board procedures brought into question

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

Tonight, a public hearing will be held at T.C. Walker Elementary School to hear from Gloucester citizens concerning the fate of the former black training center. Two members of the school board (Burruss and Hensley) have already stated that there is no reason to hold this meeting, as the board has already voted; albeit, without voting on the actual motion on the floor, and without a public hearing.

Now the board must go back and retrace its steps. I have contacted Ms. Parker, chair of the board, and copied all members, to ask if a new vote will be taken after the public hearing, as the vote taken on April 3 should be rescinded.

If you review the video of that board meeting, you will see that the motion put on the floor and seconded was not the motion read and voted on. Even the minutes read by the board secretary did not accurately reflect this mistake. So, to remedy this major error, the board, according to Robert’s Rules of Order, must withdraw ...
