Letter: Remembering Nelson Buchanan

Mathews County recently lost one of our most dedicated community members. Animal Control Chief Nelson Buchanan served Mathews County both as the Animal Control Officer and as a firefighter for the Mathews Volunteer Fire Department.

Mr. Buchanan’s dedication to our county clearly was impactful and well known. Since his death, I have been approached by many county employees and residents expressing their sorrow at his passing while reflecting on his service.

Buchanan approached his duties using de-escalation, explanation, education, and professionalism. Often, any public official in an enforcement role finds a disconnect between the community served and the critical demands of public health and safety. Buchanan bridged that difference with a legacy of trust and understanding with those he assisted in resolving conflicts and solving complicated situations.
