Letter: Reject this proposal

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

Subdividing and deeding a parcel of Mathews Court House only benefits the entity acquiring the property. It will be a loss to the community. Moving forward on this matter will not settle the issue. Restrictive covenants may not be binding, as once the property is privately owned, the owner could challenge the restrictions.

In a November 2021 referendum, a majority of voters opposed moving the statue. Deeding property in our town square to a private group seems like a more significant decision and yet it will be decided by majority vote of the board and not a referendum.

I urge the board to reject this proposal. Maintaining county ownership benefits the entire community and gives the Board of Supervisors authority to make decisions regarding the use of our town center.
