Letter: Regional economic plan will hurt Mathews

On May 24, Mathews supervisors voted to join the MPEDRO (Middle Peninsula Economic Development Resource Organization) in order to benefit the economic interests of Mathews. Only Supervisor Morrow opposed. I urge the BOS to rescind this decision. Item #6 in the County Administrator’s Report was not addressed and may undercut all economic efforts to enhance the future of Mathews (The PDC mentioned is the Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission).

Item #6. PDC Request—Chesapeake Bay Epicenter.

The PDC is identifying Mathews as the epicenter of Chesapeake Bay Watershed regulatory, environment and economic impacts. Our position is that a disproportionate share of these impacts is experienced in Mathews. There are serious issues now and in the future that we have to address that will have far-reaching global consequences for us; including potential saltwater intrusion, non-tidal and tidal wetlands, drainage, groundwater, septic permits, dredging, ...
