Letter: Reconsider Mathews Elementary

I am writing in response to the article titled, “Choices for school name narrowed to two,” published in your newspaper on Thursday, Nov. 12.

I understand the Mathews County School Board deciding to change the name of Lee-Jackson Elementary to a name that won’t be racially conflicting. I appreciate that a survey was conducted asking the community for their input about the new name. The newspaper article stated that 182 of 294 responses chose the name Mathews Elementary, yet the committee completely disregarded the community input and came up with two other names.

Although the proposed names of Waterman Elementary and Bay Haven Elementary relate to our waterside community, this is not what the people requested. This new name most likely will be around for decades, if not centuries, and it should represent the community and their wishes.
