Letter: Recognizing a rare act of kindness

Something rare happened to me on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2012. I was helped by a "Good Samaritan" from Gloucester. I was on my way from Richmond to meet friends from my home town, Newport News, to attend a funeral of a friend of ours from high school, Newport News High School Class of 1968. This man was an active person who was full of life in high school. Sadly, my friend was injured in an accident during an alumni football game in 1971 that left him paralyzed. His 40 years that followed became an inspiration to many people.

You can understand, then, that when I ended up on the side of I-64 near Talleysville with a flat tire, I was devastated that I would not make it to the funeral on time. I pulled out my cell phone to call the friends I was meeting and was in the midst of telling them my predicament when I saw a car pull off the side of the road and start backing up to my car.
