Letter: Rebirth of the L.M. Callis house

On behalf of the J. Eddie Callis family, I want to offer a very heartfelt thank you to all of those involved in the preservation and move of the L.M. Callis house.

When we heard there were plans to demolish the house, we all had very visceral reactions. I wrote the following in a Readers Write column in the Gazette-Journal in late February: “I wish that they (the Bay School) were able to appreciate and celebrate our past while using our community’s creativity to capitalize on a worn down but still beautiful piece of our history.”

And today, less than a year later, the house is not destroyed. Instead it has been reborn.

Thank you Preservation Mathews, Bay School, Ian Morse, and countless others for your creativity and determination. You are what makes Mathews such a special place. Our only regret is that J. Eddie himself wasn’t here to see the move. He would have loved it!
