Letter: Read for yourself …then decide

Editor, Gazette-Journal: Gerrymander is a scary word. According to Merriam Webster, gerrymandering is the organizing of election districts for the sole purpose of giving an unfair advantage to one political party. At its very heart, it creates unfair elections. Individuals opposed to Virginia’s redistricting referendum maintain that Virginia Democrats are attempting to gerrymander the state in order to provide a permanent advantage to the Democratic Party in Virginia State elections. I can understand why that might be horrifying to someone who believes in free and fair elections. But is it true? If passed, will the change become a permanent part of the organization of election districts in Virginia and create permanently unfair elections for the future? The best way to know if the referendum will result in a permanent change is to read the language that is on the ballot.
