Letter: Put Kids First

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

The opening of the new Page Middle School is going to cause a lot of headaches. It looks as though the school board forgot to include desks, chairs, books, etc., plus a 2 percent raise for the teachers for the opening.

The school board has asked for the additional funds for the last three years, but they were cut from the budget.

This brings up a question. Why didn’t the board of supervisors raise taxes two years ago? If taxes would have been raised two cents to 67¢, I feel it would solve the problem we are facing today, as long as foolish spending was curtailed.

I would really like to know just how much of the $27,865,471 came from the state lottery fund, which is dedicated to the schools only.

The breakdown I saw funds were sent down dedicated to the mandates which were sent down with them. I thought these funds were sent down to the school districts to spend as needed. Thank you, state legislature.
