Letter: Put it on the ballot

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

I attended the school board meeting on July 30 at Mathews High School; they had a good crowd. As stated, no comments would be allowed from the public and this was a special session, since they just had a meeting the week before on the same subject of changing the names of the schools.

Ms. Thompson and Ms. Hodges, board members, stated that racial tension ran high last week and that they didn’t want this to continue on. The question of changing the name might be placed on the ballot in November. Now this made the best sense of anything discussed that night. That such an issue like this should be decided by the citizens of Mathews.

After about another 15 minutes’ discussion among the board members, Mr. Priest decided to ask for a negative resolution initiative to be placed on the ballot, not a positive one.
