Having recently required the services of Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue at 1:30 on a Tuesday afternoon, I must let everyone that I can know what a tremendous service they render. I think the squad is still mostly comprised of volunteers, as it was many years ago when I was a member.

So when you receive the fundraiser letter in the mail, don’t toss it aside. Remember, they answer your calls, so please answer theirs. You never know what day you will need them. Thanks to the volunteers for a fast, safe ride.

Also, having recently spent some time in Riverside Walter Reed Hospital, Gloucester, I must let the community know how fortunate this area is to have such a facility close by. Over the years, my family and I had the best of courteous, caring medical attention there.

The same goes for Riverside Hospital, Newport News.
