Letter: Potential implications of the paving project

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

I drive an ambulance for the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad. Last Thursday, with a patient in the back, I approached the one-lane traffic area on Route 14 and had to stop and wait. Fortunately, the patient was not critical, so the delay was of little importance.

I got to thinking, "Why would any responsible decision maker decide to do work on both of the main roads in the county at the same time?" The implications for all of the county emergency vehicles—police, fire and rescue—and the county residents in need of their services are potentially life threatening.

For the average county citizen, it was a major inconvenience. The decision itself flies in the face of common sense. Did VDOT make that decision? Did they let their subcontractors make that decision? Just wondering …
