Letter: Parent’s educational foundation idea gains steam

In the April 19 issue of the Gazette-Journal, an article on the Mathews County Board of Supervisors’ meeting of April 16 reported remarks by Melissa Maggioncalda, expressing her disappointment in the financial support for the schools by the supervisors. Further, she stated that she planned to start an educational foundation to provide grants for teachers.

I am happy to report that she reached out to the Mathews Community Foundation for advice on the possibilities for her project, and we are working with her to explore all available options. The MCF is focused on building charitable assets in Mathews County and is a strong supporter of our public schools.

This year, the MCF will fund eight proposals from the school system with grants totaling over $50,000. This falls far short of what is needed.
