Letter: ‘Papers please’ police state is approaching

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

It is the political process itself that will foster and grow the surveillance state, now that the Genie is out of the bottle. The First and Fourth Amendments, unless vigorously defended by an aroused citizenry, are doomed to government usurpation.

Virtually every politician in Washington is intimately concerned with avoiding any responsibility or blame should a terrorist attack occur, especially one involving a huge loss of life. It is a given that all politicians are very astute and aware when it comes to covering their posterior. As it currently stands, most politicians will do whatever it takes to be reelected. As long as the majority of Americans are willing to sacrifice freedom and liberty for security, the government and the politicians will happily oblige.
