Letter: Not in a business partnership

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

I am writing to correct an error in the article, “Mathews planners to consider permit for oyster business,” which appeared in your December 6 edition and states that I am in partnership with Billy Hooper and the Williams Wharf Oyster Company. This is not accurate and I would like to set the record straight. I do not now, nor have I ever been in a partnership with any other individual or business and want to make clear that I will not be bound by anyone but myself.

My position is not to denigrate Billy or his business, but rather, evinces my penchant for accuracy as well as my professional disdain for the partnership form of business ownership and the potential disastrous consequences that can arise from using it. Specifically, partners are jointly and severally liable for the debts of the partnership and that extends to the personal assets of each partner even though they were not invested in the business.
