Letter: Not deserving of such treatment

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

Recent letters have referred to the fact that two of our new Board of Supervisors members appeared at a Mathews County Planning Commission meeting to publicly criticize and ask for the resignation of one of its members, Tim Hill.

This was explained in one letter as retribution for perceived disrespect at a political meeting and for asking on a citizen’s behalf if one of them had an active contractor’s license.

Curious, I talked to several people who had attended both meetings. All said that they were stunned that such a self-appointed “disciplinary action” would be presented at a meeting intended for public policy matters. I agree with one letter that says the new board seems to be working together better and we can all be grateful for that progress. However, I also know of Mr. Hill’s years of dedication to volunteer civic duties and community involvement. He is not deserving of such treatment.

It would have been far more appropriate, not to mention civil, if they had handled their grievances personally and not at a public meeting. I applaud anyone who takes on the challenges of being an elected official, but positions of leadership should be used to set examples we would all like our children to emulate.
