Letter: Northam is an important voice in the Senate

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

Senator Ralph Northam, the only doctor in the Virginia Senate, has first-hand experience with our health care system. He has worked for over 18 years at the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters, and is an assistant professor of neurology at Eastern Virginia Medical School. Senator Northam sees the struggles that children and their families have with the health care system, and spends his time in Richmond focused on improving the health care of Virginians.

In 2009, Senator Northam sponsored a law that banned smoking in restaurants and bars throughout the Commonwealth, and promotes children’s health initiatives. In 2010, he sponsored Senate Bill 652 requiring student-athletes suspected of head injury be evaluated by a health care professional before returning to play. For these reasons, he will have my vote on Nov. 8.
