Letter: No place like home

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

Fall is my favorite time of the year! To me there is a “spirit of thankfulness” that begins to settle over our community. As hard as I try each day to meditate for a few moments on all of God’s blessings, I fall short and fail to take a moment in a busy life to “be thankful” for all that I have been blessed with. Family, health, a home, friends, food on the table, warmth from the cold.

This year, I focus for a moment on “our community” and the many people both present and past that have and continue to make Mathews what it is. Home. We are truly blessed with so many who love this county and work to sustain it, and so here’s listed just a few.

I’m thankful for “Meals on Wheels” who not only delivers warm meals to our community but a “visit” that many times is as welcomed as the food. Our Fire Department, Rescue Squad, and Law Enforcement officials who are always “standing watc...
