Editor, Gazette-Journal:
For two years in a row, Governor Youngkin has vetoed a bill that would have guaranteed Virginians the right to access contraception. Simply stated, the bill “establishes a right to obtain contraceptives and engage in contraception.”
Both the Virginia House and Senate passed this bill with bipartisan support but Youngkin, with support from Lieutenant Governor Winsome Sears, claimed it was not needed as access to contraception is already guaranteed under the Constitution. But for how long?
Roe v. Wade was the law of the land for 50 years until the current Supreme Court overturned it and now every state to our south has placed major if not total bans on abortion. Add to that the willingness of the current administration to question other basic Constitutional rights, such as free speech and due process.
