Letter: NAACP a force for good

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

Our response to the author of the letter in the Sept. 22 issue of this paper titled “How dare they?” is how dare you defame the NAACP, an organization that has led the United States out of the darkness of Jim Crow and segregation into the light of equal rights and justice for all?

Under the banner of the NAACP since 1909, people of all races have organized, lobbied, and litigated to combat racial discrimination and racial hatred. Our nation is a better place because of the NAACP, truer to the ideals of our founders than ever before.

In Mathews County, the NAACP is a force for good. Just recently, it donated $400 to the Mathews County Public Schools to purchase two of the sewing machines needed for the new class on Family and Consumer Science. Earlier this year, it donated $1,000 the Department of Social Services for emergency assistance. This week it will award $1,000 college scholarships to two Mathews residents.
