Letter: May Faire a success

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

The May Faire 2019 Committee hosted “A Salute to the Military” this past weekend. The Committee would like to express appreciation to our county officials who were so helpful in making it a success. Streets were swept, public utilities on the court green were in working order, flags were flying and the new shrubs and landscaping looked picture-perfect.

The “Conversations” with our World War II veterans at the historic Courthouse was inspirational. We thank Mathews High School teacher Jason Smith for helping us with the videography. He indicates that the taping of the session with the veterans was successful and that we may be able to see it soon on YouTube!

And in the Historical Museum, over 800 photographs of Mathews residents who served and now serve, flanked the walls. Photos of the USS Mathews and the presence of former serviceman Butch Smith, who served on the ship, helped round out the day. The FlatTones were the hit out on the ...
