Letter: Look for the truth

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

I apologize for writing so soon after an earlier submittal, but I felt I had little choice. I run a Civil War Roundtable, which means we don’t take sides and try to deal with facts, not myths. Recently, I have had local members contact me about their encounters with organizations whose goal it is to protect the memory of those who fought for the Confederacy.

These days, you hear a lot about the Lost Cause. The biggest problem we have are those who rely on websites for their research and history. There are countless stories we have grown up with we have found to be untrue. The worst thing is, even after being proven false, webpage owners refuse to remove their pages.

Many of the people get upset, saying we are providing material to the other side. We have a hard time convincing them the other side already knows. I had hoped to publish a book on “Myths of the Civil War,” but my health is going to prevent that. I can, however, try to set a few...
