Letter: Local control of law enforcement vital

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

The Virginia Mid Peninsula Support Your Local Police Committee met Saturday, July 23, in order to plan ways of distributing literature that exposes the war on our law enforcement officers.

In the wake of police-involved incidents that have resulted in street demonstrations and police being attacked, the solution that has all too often been promoted is federal involvement and control over law enforcement. This leads to the establishment of a national police force. Not only is such a force unconstitutional, it is the hallmark of a dictatorship and the means to establishing martial law. It is because we have had law enforcement under local control that we have been able to remain a free nation. It is imperative that we keep it that way.

We are blessed to have great law enforcement officers in this area and this committee is dedicated to expressing our appreciation to them.
