Letter: Little League still owes money for lights

It has been my pleasure to serve the children of Mathews and Gloucester Counties as Little League President for the last three years.  Mathews Little League is a nonprofit organization primarily funded from the generosity of local business sponsors, fundraising efforts from our volunteers and registration fees from the participant families. All positions at the Little League are on a volunteer basis (there are no paid positions).

As one of my last acts as president, I want to raise awareness of an issue that we have been managing at the Little League that the community at large may have no knowledge. In 2003, the then Board of Directors took out a $120,000, 15-year loan to install lights on two of the baseball and softball fields. Since that time, with help from the County of Mathews, the Piankitank Ruritan Club and Chesapeake Bank, Mathews Little League has been paying down this loan.
