Letter: Let’s keep Virginia clean

As I walked my dogs through the village this morning, I was once again struck with the amount of Styrofoam cups, candy wrappers, a diaper (yes, a diaper!), cigarette packages, soda and beer cans, etc., that were dropped on the sidewalks, some within a foot of a trash receptacle provided by the county.

The county, the merchants, and the Main Street Preservation Trust have all worked hard and spent good money to improve our village … and have done a great job … and then they provide free candy to trick-or-treaters, and this is the thanks they get.

I walk and pick up trash daily, but when we have an event like Halloween or the Holiday (Christmas!) Parade or Daffodil Festival, there is always trash galore the next day and I can’t spend the time to pick it all up. Perhaps the sheriff’s department could have those in the jails who want to get outside for a while pick up after these events.
