Editor, Gazette-Journal: I’m disappointed, but not surprised, that our legislators have proposed to undermine years of effort to fix the gerrymandering of our votes in Virginia. Not surprised because our impetuous president brings out the worst in his opponents and subverts even our noblest acts. Disappointed because few Democrats have had the courage to publicly defend our existing system and the sanctity of our votes. In 2020, Virginia voters approved, by over 65 percent, a constitutional amendment to set up a redistricting commission and a process to define voting districts that are contiguous and compact and address racial and ethnic fairness. The process was first used in 2022 which resulted in an outcome at the polls that was almost identical to the split in the 2020 presidential election.
