Letter: Legionnaires need your help in working for veterans

The American Legion’s success depends entirely on active membership participation and volunteerism. The organization belongs to the people it serves and the communities in which it thrives. Locally, we have membership, but little participation or volunteerism.

Among the many programs at our post (#83) we feel the most important is to honor deceased veterans by providing military funeral honors. A full detail requires 11 members. If one is out of town or ill and another at an appointment, we make do. Our average age is over 70. Currently we have only 10 members on our Honor Guard healthy enough to stand at a graveside service for 30 minutes.

Devoted to mutual helpfulness, the Legion is committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow service members and veterans.
