In response to Mark A. Truscott’s “Plan of the left,” (July 12 Readers Write), this old Vietnam vet is recognizing a trend. Divide and conquer is a tactic used successfully for literally thousands of years. We humans have been name calling, bullying and harassing each other for so long that we almost expect it, and some even look forward to it!

Human history is full of examples: The early Romans and Greeks spoke constantly of each other’s “barbarity” and “aggressiveness” to inflame their populations’ fears and hatred. In more modern times, we see Hitler and Goebbels test marketing terms for Jews like “subhuman,” “rats” and “vermin,” until Germans began turning their neighbors in to the Gestapo, and participated in humiliating and openly beating their Jewish countrymen and women.
