Letter: Learn to live with it

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

Recently, while President Trump was recovering from COVID-19, he said Americans should not fear the virus, but rather learn to live with it. The national media, political groups, etc., are giving him holy hell for scaring and misleading us. Let’s look at some facts.

Currently, approximately 210,000 people in the U.S. have died from the virus. This number could be much lower if millions of Americans followed the guidelines provided to lessen the effects of the virus (i.e., wear masks, practice social distancing and wash up frequently). But sadly, they don’t. COVID-19 is a new disease to hit this country and medical research is working hard to find a cure; hopefully in the next few months.

COVID-19 is not the most serious disease presently facing this country. 655,000 Americans will die from heart disease this year. 606,000 people will die from cancer. And that is after years of research, new medications and ways to treat those ailments. And yet there i...
